Choosing an AI background remover is not just about getting a transparent image. You may need a free download without a watermark, clean edges around hair or product details, batch processing for a catalog, or a way to edit private photos without uploading them.
This guide compares eight background removal tools by their intended use, stated free access, file limits and important restrictions. We did not test every tool on the same images, so the recommendations are based on documented features—not a claim that one tool produces the best cutouts.
If you are looking for a replacement for remove.bg, note that its official migration information says the standalone website is scheduled to close on 1 December 2026. The alternatives below can help you plan your switch.
How These Eight Were Chosen
Each entry is based on the vendor’s own tool page, help article or pricing page, checked on 22 October 2026. We did not test all eight tools on the same set of photos, so this is a feature-and-use-case comparison rather than a ranking of cutout quality. Free access, quotas and pricing can change; check the linked official pages before choosing a tool.
| Tool | Best for | Free access (per the vendor) | Batch | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fotor | Fast free cutouts with an editor | Says free HD download, no watermark, no sign-up | Up to 50 images | Up to 60 MB and 8192 × 8192 px |
| Photoroom | Product photos and listings | Start free; high-resolution exports need a paid plan | Yes (Batch, API) | Upload JPEG or PNG |
| Adobe Firefly | Cutouts you will keep editing | Free with an Adobe account, using free daily generations | Enterprise users, or Firefly AI Assistant | JPEG, PNG, WebP up to 50 MB |
| Clipdrop | Quick portraits and products | 20 per 24 hours; high resolution is a Pro feature | Up to 10 files per upload | Part of Jasper |
| Pixlr | Free browser cutouts | Described as free; limits not stated | Yes, saved as a zip | JPEG, PNG, BMP |
| Canva | People already designing in Canva | No: paid plans only, per its Help Center | Up to 50 uploaded images per folder | Under 9 MB; downscaled above 10 MP |
| Photoshop | Difficult edges and composites | Paid Adobe app | Not assessed here | Result sits on a layer mask |
| rembg | Developers and private, local work | Free, open source | Yes, folder command | Needs Python; check model license |
What Happened to remove.bg?
remove.bg’s own pages say its background removal is moving into Canva and that the standalone website will no longer be available from 1 December 2026 at 9:00 am CET. Its API page says API background removal moves to Leonardo.Ai, also part of Canva, from the same date.
The standalone website was still live when we checked on 22 October 2026. If you use remove.bg regularly, especially through its API or a plugin, review the official migration FAQ and plan your switch before the announced closure date. Canva is one alternative to consider, but its Background Remover is included with paid plans, so compare the free options below if you want to avoid a subscription.
The 8 Tools
1. Fotor: Fast Free Cutouts With an Editor Attached
Fotor says its remover is free, with HD download, no watermark and no sign-up. It accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and HEIF files up to 60 MB, with a maximum resolution of 8192 × 8192 pixels. A magic brush lets you erase or restore areas, and batch removal handles up to 50 images.
These are Fotor’s own claims. Test with your own photo, especially if you need large output.
2. Photoroom: Product Photos and Marketplace Listings
Photoroom is built around e-commerce. You upload a JPEG or PNG, then download PNG, JPEG or WebP. You can start free, but Photoroom says high-resolution exports come with an upgrade.
For catalogs it offers batch editing and an API. On paid plans Background Remover is a core tool with no credit cost, though exports are capped each month (the Pro plan lists 1,000). That structure suits sellers more than someone who needs one portrait.
3. Adobe Firefly: When You Will Keep Editing
Adobe says you can remove backgrounds in Firefly for free with an Adobe account, using the free daily generations that come with it. It accepts JPEG, PNG and WebP files up to 50 MB and downloads a PNG with a transparent background.
Afterward you can generate a new background or upscale the image without leaving Firefly. Batch removal is offered to enterprise users and through Firefly’s AI Assistant.
4. Clipdrop: Quick Results, With a Daily Cap
Clipdrop’s free plan lists background removal at 20 per 24 hours. High-resolution background removal appears under Pro, at 1,000 per 24 hours. You can drop up to 10 files at once, and its FAQ mentions images up to 5000 × 5000 pixels.
It is a good fit for occasional portraits and product shots. If you process dozens of images a day, the cap will get in the way.
5. Pixlr: Free in the Browser
Pixlr describes its background remover as a free tool. It accepts JPEG, PNG and BMP, lets you save with a transparent, black or white background, and processes several images at once before saving them as a zip.
The tool page does not state daily limits or output size, so run a test image first. Pixlr also sells paid plans for its wider set of AI tools.
6. Canva: Convenient If You Already Pay
Canva’s Help Center says Background Remover is included with paid plans. It works on photos under 9 MB, not vector images, and an uploaded photo over 10 MP is downscaled to 10 MP after the background is removed. That last limit matters for print work.
In its favor, Canva has erase and restore brushes, and you can remove backgrounds from up to 50 uploaded images in a folder. Results land in a new “[folder name] – Edited” folder and your originals stay unchanged. Canva’s marketing page talks about Pro for unlimited use, while the Help Center says paid plans, so check what your own account shows.
7. Adobe Photoshop: Maximum Control
In Photoshop, the Remove Background quick action sits in the Properties panel under Quick Actions, and you can also find it through the Discover panel. Tutorials describe the result as a layer mask on your image, which means you can keep refining edges instead of committing to a cut.
That control is why Photoshop suits hair, glass and composites where an automatic cutout is almost right. It is a paid Adobe app (a free trial exists, so check Adobe’s plans page for current pricing), and it is overkill for a single logo.
8. rembg: Free, Local and Scriptable
rembg is an open-source (MIT) tool that works as a command-line program, a Python library, an HTTP server or a Docker container. It needs Python 3.11 to 3.13. A typical setup is pip install “rembg[cpu, cli]”, then rembg i input.png output.png for one file or rembg p input_folder output_folder for a folder.
Models download on first use and run on your machine. Two cautions apply. The default model, BRIA’s RMBG-2.0, is about 1 GB and carries a license that requires a paid agreement for commercial use, so check model licenses before using results commercially. And rembg also offers a withoutBG cloud option, which sends images to that service’s servers.
How to Choose
- One image, no account: start with Fotor, Photoroom, Pixlr or Clipdrop and compare the edges.
- Product catalog: Photoroom or Fotor for batches, Canva if you are already subscribed, rembg if you are comfortable with scripts.
- Already in a design suite: Canva or Photoshop saves a round trip.
- Private or offline work: rembg is the one option here documented to run locally.
- Hair, fur, glass: use a tool with a refine brush (Canva, Fotor) or Photoshop’s mask.
- Before processing a full batch: Test one difficult image and download the result. Check edge quality, transparency, output resolution and any watermark or usage restriction first.
Check the Cutout Before You Use It
Background removal quality depends on the photo. Clear contrast between the subject and background, even lighting and a sharp original image can help produce cleaner edges. Hair, fur, glass and objects with colours similar to the background are more difficult to separate accurately.
After downloading the cutout, place it over both a dark and a light background. Zoom in around hair, shoulders and other fine details to check for missing areas, rough edges or a coloured halo. Also confirm that the exported file has a genuinely transparent background before using it in a design or product listing.
Our guide on how to export a transparent PNG and confirm it is truly transparent explains how to check transparency. PNG cutouts can be large, so see our guides on choosing the right image format and reducing image file size without making it blurry before publishing them.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming “free” means unlimited: A free tool may restrict downloads, resolution, daily usage or access to certain features.
- Ignoring file limits: Check file size, image dimensions and daily quotas before starting a large job.
- Choosing the wrong export format: JPG does not support transparency. Use PNG or WebP when your intended workflow supports transparent output, and verify the downloaded file.
- Uploading sensitive photos without checking privacy terms: Review how the service processes, stores and handles uploaded images before using it for private or confidential work.
- Overlooking commercial-use licences: Check the applicable model and software licences before using AI-generated cutouts in commercial projects. Open-source software does not automatically mean every model has identical usage terms.
- Editing official ID photos without checking the rules: Passport and other identity-photo requirements vary by authority. Check the relevant official instructions before changing a photo’s background.
Frequently Asked Questions
Conclusion
Choose a background remover based on your image quality requirements, processing volume, privacy needs and budget. Before committing to a tool, test it on a difficult photo and check the downloaded result for edge quality, transparency and resolution. If you are replacing remove.bg, compare at least one suitable free option with a paid alternative before moving your workflow. Use our transparent PNG guide to verify the final export.
